Is MW4 DMZ Free to Play?
No, MW4 DMZ is not free. DMZ is a mode inside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, a paid standalone game, and you need the Standard or Vault Edition to play it. That is different from 2022, when MW2’s DMZ was a free beta inside Warzone 2.0.
On consoles you also need an online subscription (PlayStation Plus, Game Pass Essential or Nintendo Switch Online), because DMZ is an online mode. Activision also says a mobile phone number linked to your Activision account may be required.

| Standard (physical) | $69.99* | Yes, from 23 Oct (no early access) | None |
| Vault Edition (digital only) | $99.99* | Yes, early access 20 Oct | Third Active Duty Operator slot and a Vault Deployment Kit |
* Prices as reported by third-party retail coverage; Activision’s editions page states only that upgrading from Digital Standard to Vault costs $30 (SRP or regional equivalent). Check your store for local pricing.
What the Vault Edition adds to DMZ
According to Activision’s editions page, Vault owners get a third Active Duty Operator slot (Standard players start with two) and a Vault Deployment Kit containing:
- 2 Weapon Insurance Contracts
- 2 Operator Rescue Beacons
- 2 Fulton Drop Markers
- 2 Medium Backpacks
- 2 2-Plate Carriers
The Vault Signature Weapon Collection blueprints appear once in your DMZ inventory; if you lose them in a deployment, you can rebuy them at a discount in the Gunsmith, according to the official FOB guide. None of this is needed to play; it gives you a head start and one more Operator to keep alive.
Is MW4 on Game Pass?
Not at launch. Activision’s launch announcement says Modern Warfare 4 is a standalone release that will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027. Earlier games such as Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III stay on Game Pass Ultimate.
Why this matters for the map
Because DMZ is paid, the player base on day one is everyone who pre-ordered digitally. If you are deciding whether to buy, the MW4 DMZ map shows what Hajin offers: 13 major points of interest, more than 60 named locations and five threat levels. The release time page has the countdown to early access.
